Reasons why a web designer should understand SEO

A website designer may have little to do with the actual content of a website, but there are reasons for a web designer to have clear understanding of search engine optimization. Although SEO is most often associated with text and the use of keywords, it also involves linking, tagging, navigation and loading of website pages. If web visitors leave a badly designed web page because they do not instantly find what they are seeking, this has an adverse affect on SEO. When visitors return to search results a few seconds after clicking on a link, this is an indication to the search engine that there was little value in the content. Consequently, the website may get a lower ranking in search engine results.

These are the main reasons why a web designer should understand SEO:

1. Linking

It is important that each page of a website is designed so visitors can find internal links and navigate around the website without experiencing any difficulty or frustration.

Although a web designer is not concerned with external linking, it is well to remember that each page of content on a website can be linked back from other websites, online directories, blogs, social networks and bookmarking communities. Some of these links will help to increase the SEO and search engine page ranking of the website.

Social network updates and bookmarks also get indexed by search engines, and some bookmark networks provide “do-follow” links. A web designer should ensure that share buttons are clearly visible on each page, either near the top or immediately following text, video or image. This makes it easy for visitors to share content with followers in different networks. A social network user only needs to click an icon button or follow a “share this” link to recommend the web page, and have it show up in their status feed. A link back to the content will automatically be generated to appear in a social media update, or as a social bookmark.

2. Loading

Another important element in web design is speed of page loading. A web page with too many graphics, widgets, banners and boxes can take a long time to load, and will annoy many visitors who do not have broadband Internet connection. It can also have an adverse affect on SEO; Google recently revealed that speed of page loading is part of the algorithm for page ranking.

3. Keywords

Producing SEO keyword content is largely of concern to content writers and publishers, but a web designer should understand the importance of incorporating keywords into page links, image titles, video tags, page description, heading and tagging. Whenever new content is uploaded onto a website, it should be designed to allow keywords to be identified with that page, and to show up in page links on other parts of the website.

A website with could have, for example, new content added to provide tips on web design, and another new page for information on website promotion. Prominent links should instantly appear on the homepage for Web Design and Website Promotion. Use of keywords in the page URL will also help search engines to identify important keywords. Each new page URL could look something like this: mywebsite.com/webdesign/ or mywebsite.com/website-promotio n.

A web designer ought to be aware of the way Internet users search for information, and consider exactly what they will find when they visit the website. Web design is not about using sophisticated coding and hosting some impressive interactive features, it is more important to ensure that visitors find what they want quickly, and that people can easily navigate their way around the website. SEO plays a part in all of this, and a good web designer will always consider SEO to be an important element in website design.

Build a Website and They Will Come!

The 1989 movie Field of Dreams was a fantasy that used the phrase “If you build it, he will come!” which is sometimes misquoted as “If you build it, they will come.” In the movie, Kevin Costner built a baseball field because he thought that “Shoeless” Joe Jackson would return and once again play baseball in the field.

If you build a website will visitors come to your site? If you believe they will just because you have a website, then you, like the movie, are living a fantasy.

Today it takes more than just having a website to get visitors (potential customers) to come to your site.

You wouldn’t design a brochure or catalog and not mail it out to potential customers would you? No, of course not! Unfortunately, most website owners are doing just that with their site. They are not taking the proper steps to promote (market) their website and therefore are not getting the traffic they should.

Today, the Internet (specifically search engines) is the number one source that individuals use to look for products and services, even for local sources. Without properly promoting your website, you will be sitting in the stands waiting for the game to start.

So, what do you do? The following list gives some of the best proven ways to get significant, quality traffic to your website of potential customers looking for your products or services.

Search Engine Optimization

Writing Blog Articles

Submitting Articles to Article Websites

Using Social Media

Pay-Per-Click Advertising

The primary goal of a well established plan to promote (market) your website is to get your website listed high in the search engine results. Not just for the name of your company, but for keyword/phrases potential customers would search on when looking for your products or services.

This goal holds true whether you sell nationally or locally. With the search engines being the number one place individuals go to search for products or services; don’t you want your website to show up high in the search engines or do you want a “Website of Dreams?.”

Where do you start to promote your website? Most website owners lack the knowledge of how to properly promote their site, so the best staring point is to find an Internet Marketing company that has the experience to guide you.

Learn why local search engine marketing is essential for your business

By now, most people are aware of the benefits of search engine marketing and search engine optimization. One concept that many businesses have not completely explored, however, is using local search engine marketing to extend your online reach even further as well as to drum up local business. It is important that you learn why local search engine marketing is essentially for your business if you want to get the most out of everything that search engine marketing and search engine optimization have to offer.

Search engine marketing and search engine optimization, in their traditional forms, are designed to optimize for all users of the internet, including users from all over the world. By focusing on a search engine marketing endeavor that is localized, you can make sure that you are attracting attention from the right web traffic – People in your local area that can patronize your business not only online, but in person as well.

Search engine marketing involves keyword optimization, and you are probably already using keywords in your web content and advertising endeavors. The way that you can localize your search engine marketing campaign is to change the way that you optimize your content with keywords by implementing local modifiers for the keywords that you use. For example, keywords like “weight loss help” are over saturated because there are so many websites on the internet today that are using keywords like these, broad as they are. Could it be possible to optimize for this keyword while catering to a local crowd? How about “weight loss help in austin tx”? Now you are carving out a niche for yourself, and seriously cutting down on the competition by targeting a specific area, the local area where you operate.

There are a lot of websites on the internet that can help you with local search engine marketing as well. Websites like http://www.yelp.com and even http://maps.google.com can help you increase your search engine marketing capabilities online. When you create a local presence for your company or business online, you are creating a completely new and unique presence for yourself online that will go further then your traditional web presence, allowing you to reach out to new audiences that normally would not find you online. This way, when people start looking for local help in their vicinity, and they plug a query into a search engine, your business will come up for them.

In case you weren’t aware of this already, most people are going to prefer working with local businesses rather than product and service providers in other states and countries. This means that catering to your local audience is vitally important to the success of your business and your ability to attract traffic to your website, blog or anything else that you are attempting to market and advertise online.
